The cold, wet, weather has not been conducive to spring planting in southern Wisconsin, according to David Fischer with the University of Wisconsin Extension. “The nice weather has disappeared and a lot of farmers are trying to get the little bit done that they can,” Fischer said, includng some spring tilling. Farmers are anxious to get corn in the ground, but Mother Nature has not cooperated so far.

“There’s a span of time in there, we look from April 20th to May 5th, some people might say May 7th, but that’s the window where we want to get corn planted for a hundred percent yield potential,” said Ted Bay, UW Extension Crops and Farm Management Agent for Grant County. “About the only planting that I’ve seen to date is alfalfa and oats,” said Fischer. “Corn and beans are still sitting in the bag.” Fischer said there needs to be a big warmup before farmers can begin planting corn.
