Wisconsin farmers are being cautioned about manure spreading. Donna Gilson with the state Ag Department said many farmers may be running short on storage capacity this time of year – but with warming temperatures and the possibility of precipitation, they need to exercise caution before spreading manure on fields.

Gilson said they should check with their county land conservation departments to determine the least risky places to spread manure. “They to have a spill response plan in place in case the worst happens and they do have either a spill or some kind of runoff,” Gilson said.

“Manure runoff into a stream can cause fish kills,” said Gilson. “It’s pollutant, and does all the things that pollutants do to rivers.” The state has an online Manure Management Advisory System for farmers, which includes a Runoff Risk Advisory Forecast map which is updated daily.
