Three people were killed when a plane crashed while trying to land at the Lakeland Airport in northern Wisconsin. The Vilas County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call reporting the crash at just after 7 Thursday night. Rescuers found the craft about a half-mile southwest of the airport, which is located near Arbor Vitae. There were no survivors.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. FAA officials said the single-engine plane was thought to be a Cirrus SR-22, and it apparently took off from Milwaukee. Pat Rowe of Milwaukee's Mitchell International Airport did not know if the flight originated there or stopped at Mitchell from another location.
The victims' names were not immediately released, pending notification of relatives.
