Brett Favre said there's nothing anybody in the Green Bay Packers organization could have done to change his mind about retirement and he's leaving the NFL on his own terms.
Favre told a gathering of media today (Thursday) at Lambeau Field that he feels he could still play, but said he had nothing more to give.
Favre wrestled with this decision for the past couple of seasons but returned for another year. This time, he decided it was time to walk away. He repeatedly said he has no regrets and believes he made the right decision.
Favre said the stress that goes with the job has always been there and is very demanding. But as he's gotten older, it appears to be increasing and taking a bigger toll.
It was an emotional retirement press conference for Favre. His opening statements took more than 7 minutes before the conference was opened up to media questions. Much of that time was with Favre struggling to hold it together and not totally break down.
Favre said he doesn't plan to be involved in any capacity with the team during the 2008 season. He said he believes the Packers are close to being a Super Bowl team and feels Aaron Rodgers will come in and do great. But Favre said he doesn't plan on spending much time talking with Rodgers. He said it's his turn to go out and run the team.
