According to various reports, Brett Favre has informed Minnesota Vikings

Brett Favre's 1st retirement

personnel that he has decided to retire.  Head coach Brad Childress said he hasn’t heard a thing and won’t believe it until he hears from Favre himself.

The Vikings are still holding out hope that the news isn’t true, or is at least reversible.  There’s always a chance that the Vikings, who were set to pay Favre $13-million this season, could increase their offer.  It’s an uncapped year, which means the Vikings could go fairly high for Favre’s services for one more season.

Reaction to Favre’s 3rd potential retirement is mixed.  Many don’t believe it’s true and feel that Favre will still be under center for the Vikings when they open the season September 9th at the Superdome against the New Orleans Saints.

If Favre does indeed retire, the NFC North would literally belong to the Green Bay Packers.  Packers center Scott Wells was asked if he thinks Favre is retiring.

If Favre doesn’t change his mind, he leaves the Vikings hanging.  Tarvaris Jackson would move into the starters spot, but the Vikings could have moved on a different quarterback during free agency or through a trade.  They believed Favre would return so they didn’t do anything.  Now, that could prove to be the Vikings downfall.

But remember, there’s still a few weeks and maybe even longer for Favre to have to make a final decision.  Who knows, this could be a final decision, but how can anyone take Favre seriously?
