Senator Russ Feingold says the US will “step up to the plate” in helping out the neighboring nation of Haiti which is suffering after a massive earthquake. Despite US economic woes, Feingold says the disaster gives a sense of perspective for Americans; “This couldn’t be a tougher time for us but when you seem something like this you realize things could be much, much worse.”

Feingold recalls overseas disasters that the US assisted with in recent years.

The Wisconsin Democrat says this is “one of the few areas people don’t take political shots,” but he concedes partisanship seems to find its way into everything.

President Obama has already announced $100 million for relief efforts to the island nation.
