With many of them holding “Feingold for Senate” signs, about 80 people attended what was billed as a “Get out the Vote” rally Monday on the lawn of Racine’s City Hall.

Feingold told the crowd not to be discouraged by the polls that show Republican Ron Johnson in the lead, saying other polls show a different story. He says the GOP is counting on Democrats staying home on Election Day, and he expects them to be proven wrong in November.

Feingold addressed the so-called “enthusiasm gap” between Democrats and the GOP, calling it a figment of the Republicans’ imagination.

Feingold faces Republican Ron Johnson in the upcoming November election.  He criticized Johnson for relying heavily on campaign advertising paid for by out-of-state corporate interests to reach voters.  Feingold says he “won’t play it that way.”

This was the first of the “Get out the Vote” rallies Feingold is holding around the state.

Meanwhile, Racine County District Attorney Mike Nieskes watched the rally from a bench in front of City Hall, after getting calls complaining about a political rally being held outside of a polling place.

Nieskes says he contacted city officials about the requirement that political gatherings and signs be at least 100 feet from a polling place. After the line was determined, event organizers were told to keep east of there. They did, and Nieskes left after the rally was over.
