If the city of Madison follows through on a proposal to ban plastic grocery bags, it will have a fight on its hands.

The Wisconsin Grocers Association says it's prepared to fight the proposal, which a city committee is hoping to take up later this year. Association President Brandon Scholz says members encourage recycling for plastic bags, but a ban would go to far. He says they would fight the ban because it would impact costs for consumers and retailers.

Scholz says customers like plastic bags because they have other uses, such as lunch bags or in wastebaskets. He also says paper bags cost more, are difficult to store, and have a higher cost to transport them to stores.
