One of Fond du Lac's most recognizable structural landmarks was destroyed by fire overnight. The old St. Louis Church went up in flames. Fire Battalion Chief John Duffy says when fire fighters arrived they soon discovered fire on the north side of the church and in the basement; flames were too extensive to enter safely. The roof of the old church collapsed as did one of the two landmark spires that could be seen for miles. The other is structurally unsound. Chief Duffy says Alliant Energy had to cut power to the area while they battled the blaze. Hundreds in the area were affected. No one was hurt in the fire. The old church was scheduled to be demolished, but a businessman had recently purchased the church to try and preserve it and use it for his business. [thanks Bob Nelson, KFIZ ]
