A state office building in downtown Madison is closed today, following an early morning fire.
The Madison Fire Department was called to the GEF1 building at about 2 a.m. Friday. Department spokeswoman Lori Wirth says crews found a fire on the fourth floor of the building, which they were able to knock down.
GEF-1 houses the state Department of Workforce Development and Department of Children and Families. It’s located a block away from the Capitol.
A spokeswoman with the state Department of Administration says “the services provided to customers by both DWD and DCF are still available while the building is closed. DWD and DCF’s online services are not impacted, and all other DCF services are operating as normal. In addition, unemployment payments that were scheduled to be issued today by DWD have been processed.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation and the building will remain closed for at least today.
