State Representative Jeff Wood (I-Chippewa Falls) apologizes for his behavior and says he will not seek re-election in the state Assembly next year. In a statement, the Chippewa Falls Independent says that he plans “to focus on recovery.”

Wood explains, he’s been in an inpatient treatment facility for the past three weeks when his roommate unexpectedly left the program and Wood went to find him, but had taken more medication than was prescribed.

Wood was arrested that afternoon on suspicion of OWI.

Governor Jim Doyle says Wood should resign, saying Wood is not adequately representing his constituents. State Representative Stephen Nass (R-Whitewater) introduced a resolution last week to expel Wood from the Legislature. Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan says he’ll appoint a special committee to consider that expulsion resolution.

In his statement, Wood apologizes for the “hurt and embarrassment” he’s caused his family and “regrets any disgrace” he may have brought on the Wisconsin State Legislature.

He says his primary focus must be on treatment for his struggles with drug and alcohol abuse.

Wednesday’s arrest was Wood’s fifth for driving while intoxicated.
