Heavy rains overnight over the West Central Wisconsin have resulted in heavy flooding in Arcadia. The downtown area in the Trempealeau County city of about 2,400 people is under several feet of water, resulting in the evacuation of about 1,500 people.

City Clerk Angela Berg says it’s the most rain she’s seen in the 12 years she’s lived there. She says the flooding began early this morning, after heavy rains hung over the region.

Susan Burleigh with the Wisconsin Emergency Operations Center says the downtown area of Arcadia in Trempealeau County is under up to three feet of water, and the National Guard was called for help this morning. The Red Cross has set up a shelter at the National Guard Armory in Arcadia.

Governor Doyle has declared a state of emergency in Trempealeau Count. Downtown businesses, schools, and major roads are also closed.
