Rock County's UW Extension agent says flood waters have destroyed an estimated 7500 acres of crops in the county, and there's a potential for Salmonella contamination from some crops that survive. Jim Stute says washing vegetables and fruit may not be enough. "It's not just Salmonella on the fruit," says Stute. "There's some scientific evidence to suggest that it can actually enter through the roots, and then move through the plant to the fruit." Stute says other flood related problems on farm land includes runoff, which can contain phosphorus and pesticides. "Primarily it's phosphorous that we're concerned about," says Stute.
