Refrigerators built before 1993 can use two to three times more energy than newer, high-efficiency models. Focus on Energy, Wisconsin utilities’ statewide program for energy efficiency and renewable energy, pays consumers a $40 incentive to recycle old refrigerators or freezers.

“The biggest benefit to taking that old refrigerator or freezer off the grid and recycling it is to really reduce that energy bill,” said Sarah Platt with Focus on Energy. “Old refrigerators and freezers can really suck a lot of energy.”

You’ll not only save some bucks, you’ll also save your back, as they’ll haul it away for you, and about 95 percent of the materials from the old appliances are recycled. “It’s really a great way to not only help reduce your utility bill, but being environmentally conscious and responsible when you’re getting rid of that old fridge,” said Platt.
