A Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy found a 77-year-old Campbellsport area woman living in “deplorable conditions” when he went to check on her welfare last Friday. Sheriff’s Captain Rick Olig said the woman had missed some medical treatments so the deputy went to her trailer. The deputy did not get an answer at the door at first, but then heard someone yelling for help.

The woman was on a couch and said she had not been able to get up for four days. The residence also had dozens of cats and a dog. The deputy found more than 30 cats and the dog and conditions were bad.

The County’s Public Health Officer deemed the trailer “uninhabitable.” The woman was sent to St. Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend and later was transferred to Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee. The Fond du Lac Humane Society took 30 cats from the home Monday and more were caught in live traps Tuesday.

Olig said it’s too early yet to say if there will be criminal charges, but the woman did need help.
