A former deputy with the Dane County Sheriff’s Department could have murder charges filed against him early this week, after his wife and sister-in-law were killed at his home in Fitchburg.

Police say 39-year-old Ashlee Steele and 38-year-old Kacee Tollefsbol of Lake Elmo, Minnesota were found at the Steeles’ home last Friday. Ashlee was dead, and Tollefsbol died later at a hospital. Police have not said exactly how the two women died, only calling it “homicidal violence” while the matter remains under investigation by Fitchburg Police.

Officials confirmed Saturday that Steele’s husband, 39-year-old Andy Steele, had been arrested. He’s at an undisclosed medical facility with a non-life-threatening injury from the incident, which police have said was consistent with a suicide attempt.

Andy Steele was diagnosed in June with ALS. He recently took a medical retirement from the Dane County sheriff’s office.

On Sunday. Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney called it an “overwhelming tragedy for so many.” The sheriff said his office is providing resources to help his staffers cope with the incident. The sheriff’s office is not involved in the investigation.
