Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s officials hope new technology can shed some light on a 20-year-old murder case. Eighteen-year-old Berit Beck of Sturtevant was last seen at the Fond du Lac Forest Mall 20 years ago this week. Her van was found outside the Fond du Lac Kmart and six weeks later her body was discovered in a ditch near Waupun.

Sheriff Mick Fink and Detective Charles Sosinski are the two remaining members of the Department who investigated the case. Fink says he and Sosinski went over the 600 page report again and late last week evidence was transported to the state crime lab for examination. Fink says they hope DNA evidence will give them a new lead.

Lieutenant Cameron McGee now oversees the Detective’s Bureau. He says the first few days of the investigation would have been crucial if they had been investigating the case as a homicide, but at the time they were looking for a missing woman. Fink says shopping items Beck’s killer went through in the van would only have been examined for fingerprint evidence during the initial investigation. Any skin cells left on those items can now be examined for DNA.
