The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says work on repairing the sagging Leo Frigo Bridge will begin Friday. The bridge, which carries I-43 over the Fox River, has been closed to traffic since September 25th, when a dip was found in the roadway.
A DOT investigation found that one of the bridge’s piers – Pier 22 – had sunk about two feet due to corrosive soil surrounding it. Governor Scott Walker formally signed the bid approval to the Waukesha-based firm Zenith Tech. The firm submitted the low bid of around $7.7 million to repair the bridge.
Zenith Tech will have to install new cement supports around five piers. Their contract requires that the bridge must reopen by January 17.
