Mad Rollin Dolls season opener (Image:WRN)

Roller Derby is hot in Wisconsin as the league in the capital city is drawing a bigger and bigger turnout.

During the Mad Rollin Dolls season opener this weekend, a skater who goes by Major Kusinocky says there is nothing like it in sports, “Even if you don’t understand the game it’s pretty exciting to watch because people can do amazing things on skates.”

With a build like a runway model, she admits size does help in the game but the key is “technique.”

All skaters are unpaid and do it for love of the sport. Dutch Oven teaches chemistry at a local college, “One time I was teaching my students found an interesting picture of me on the internet…It was me sitting on the toilet. It was a little embarrassing but you know I’m proud of my alter ego.”

This will be the first season the Dolls will hold most of their bouts in the Alliant Energy Center Coliseum rather than the campus’ smaller venue.  Dutch Oven says last year’s movie Whip It brought some people to events but it’s the sport’s fun that keeps them coming back for more.
