A new twist to highway construction projects getting underway this spring in Wisconsin.

Steve Krebs of the DOT says old asphalt roofing shingles are being recycled for use in road-building. Krebs says the "Top-Down" approach allows for an item that usually ends up in landfills to be converted in to roads in Wisconsin.

Krebs says the shingles will make up about five-percent of the asphalt mix that's used on Wisconsin road projects. He says there's no anticipated drop-off in quality.

Krebs says the new technique will save landfill space and money.
