The state Constitution says the governor and lieutenant governor are elected together. However, Government Accountability Board spokesman Reid Magney says it’s unclear whether both offices could be recalled under a single petition or if each needs to be targeted on its own.
Magney says the GAB is hoping the Attorney General can provide some clarity on the issue and the Board is expected to request a formal opinion on the subject at its meeting next week.
The issue is a concern because opponents of Governor Scott Walker are expected to mount a recall attempt later this year. Without an opinion, Magney says it remains unclear whether those recall petitions will have to include the name of Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch as well.
So far, there has been no talk about attempting to remove Kleefisch from office through a recall.
