Major League Baseball players are not letting Arizona’s new immigration law

Arizona’s new measure is set to take affect July 29th. It requires police, while enforcing other laws, to ask about a person’s immigration status if there is reasonable suspicion that the person is in the country legally.
Now, a number of players are standing up for the Latin community, threatening to boycott next years game, including Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo.
Gallardo was selected to pitch in this years all-star game but had to pull out because of injury. Gallardo said if he’s fortunate enough to be named to next year’s team, he’ll boycott.
For now, the game is still scheduled to go on in 2011. Commissioner Bud Selig has not spoken directly about the matter. The baseball players union said they will support their players regardless of what decision they decide to make next year.
I think this is an issue that Commissioner Bud Selig will soon have to address. It sounds like Bud wants to bury his head in the sand and take his chances. I’m not sure baseball needs to get dragged any further into this. Does Selig really want players boycotting the all-star game in 2011? I know Bud doesn’t want see a political issue force him to pull the game from Phoenix. But this could get really messy and could do damage to the games image.
Find a different city Mr. Selig. Dont’ mix baseball and politics.
