GALLARDO
It was a “quietly busy” Wednesday for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Early in the afternoon the team placed Starting Pitcher Yovani Gallardo on the 15-day disabled list. Gallardo had to leave Tuesday’s start in the 5th inning after suffering a strained right hamstring. It is unclear how long his stay will be.
Second baseman Scooter Gennett was recalled to take Gallardo’s spot on the roster. Gennett was called up Tuesday to be the 26th man for the doubleheader and sent back down after the games. Wednesday, he was right back with the team.
TRADE DEADLINE
The Major League Baseball trade deadline came in went Wednesday afternoon. Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin decided to keep the roster as it despite weeks of rumors involving a number of players. Melvin wasn’t alone in his thinking. Only a couple of moves were made throughout baseball: Baltimore picked up starter Bud Norris from Houston, Arizona sent starter Ian Kennedy to San Diego, and Kansas City picked up outfielder Justin Maxwell from Houston.
Teams will still be able to make deals through the month of August. However, all moves must be done through waivers making it a little more difficult to complete a trade.
GAME
On the field Wednesday, the Brewers couldn’t pick up the 4-game sweep in Chicago as they fell to the Cubs 6-1 at Wrigley Field.
Wily Peralta picked up the loss allowing 4-runs, 3-earned in 5-innings of work before being pulled because of a 66-minute rain delay. Catcher Jonathan Lucroy made his first career start at first base and clubbed a pair of doubles while driving in the lone run of the night.
The Brewers six-day road trip came to end with a 4-3 record. They are off Thursday before Washington visits Miller Park for a 3-game weekend series starting Friday. After the quick trip home, Milwaukee heads to San Francisco for 4-games starting Monday before wrapping up the week in Seattle.
