Statewide gas prices in Wisconsin are headed back down, but the state still remains well above the national average.

The last several weeks have brought some pain at the pump for drivers as Pam Moen of AAA-Wisconsin says the statewide average rose to almost $4 a gallon over a very short period of time. It is heading downward again, with an average Thursday sitting at $3.86 a gallon. That’s compared to the national average of $3.71 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel.

Prices are still $0.35 higher than a month ago and $0.20 more than they were at this time last year. Moen says Midwestern states are still feeling the impact of supply problems earlier this summer. A broken pipeline in Wisconsin and maintenance issues at an oil refinery have been widely blamed for the spike in prices across the region.

While prices are on the way back down, Moen does not expect them to fall very far until after the Labor Day weekend. As demand drops off with the end of the busy summer driving season, prices across the country are expected to improve.
