Workers at Mercury Marine’s Plant 15 in Fond du Lac were evacuated after a gasoline spill Monday night.

Fire Department officials say it happened just after 7 p.m. when about 50 gallons of gasoline were discharged into a large tunnel. Because of the extreme hazardous condition in the confined space and the threat of a possible ignition of vapors, the building was evacuated while firefighters ventilated the area.

Mercury officials contacted a remediation company to mitigate the spill. They removed and cleaned until there were no flammable vapors or liquids detected. No injuries were reported. Fire crews were on the scene for several hours.
