High gas prices are forcing many of us to scale back our summer travel plans, and there are some concerns about what impact that will have on Wisconsin's tourism industry.

A recent survey from auto club AAA shows rising gas prices are keeping more people off the roads this summer. For the Fourth of July weekend, travel is expected be down about 1.3 percent from the same time last year. That's a drop of about 550,000 people.

However, Triple-A Wisconsin's Pam Moen says over 5.3 million people in the Great Lakes region alone will still be traveling this weekend. But just how far they're willing to go is still a concern.

Moen says many areas that rely on tourism are hoping to see state residents roll into town, since fewer people are willing to travel long distances. She says local tourism could make up for the loss of out of state visitors, minimizing the impact of bad weather this past winter and earlier this summer.
