Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker will make his presidential plans official this evening during a rally in Waukesha.

The Republican governor is expected to announce he’s entering an already crowded field of candidates seeking the Republican presidential nomination, but he does so with a strong early advantage. Marquette Law School political scientist Charles Franklin says Walker is well-positioned in the race, after “establishing himself as a top-tier candidate in national polling and in the early primary states,” which includes consistent first place finishes in early polling in Iowa.

Franklin says tonight’s kick-off does bring a new level of scrutiny for the governor. However, he notes that’s already been ramping up because of Walker’s position in the GOP field.

The announcement does likely mean that Walker, who has already been on the road many times this spring, will likely be absent from the state more often in the coming weeks. Franklin notes the governor will follow up his campaign launch with a multi-state tour this week, which will stop in several key early voting states.
