Local, county, and state officials held a listening session in Fond du Lac last night to hear concerns about a growing problem on Lake Winnebago; the weeds. With improved water clarity  the weeds this past summer clogged jet skis, compromised boating, and released toxins dangerous to people and their pets.

Fond du Lac County Executive Al Buechel was one of those doing the listening. He says it’s a real problem and something has to be decided on how to attack it. Local outdoorsman Bob Haase says the only way to tackle the problem is to work together.

Rob McLennan is the DNR’s team leader for the Lake Winnebago Area Watershed. He says people have legitimate concerns about the problem.

Twenty-five people spoke during the gathering, but there were at least three-to-four times that many in the audience for the listening session at the UW-Fond du Lac.
