A proposal to require ignition interlock devices on the vehicles of drunk drivers doesn't go far enough. That's according to Kari Kinnard with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, who wants the devices placed on the vehicles of first time offenders. Proposed legislation at the Capitol would require them after a second offense.

The devices require a driver to pass an alcohol breath test before a vehicle can be started. Kinnard says they're effective in keeping repeat offenders off the road. She says they allow an offender to continue to drive and go on with their life, but keeps them from getting behind the wheel after they've been drinking.

Kinnard says the bill being considered by an Assembly committee is a good first step. However, she says first time offenders are unlikely to stop driving drunk, so a message needs to be sent.
