Republican legislators say they'll take Governor Doyle's proposed smoking ban "to the people." Speaker Mike Huebsch says that while Republicans are opposed to the governor's proposed $1.25 a pack increase for cigarettes, he's keeping an open mind about a statewide ban on smoking in bars and restaurants. Huebsch says it would be a major change in policy that goes much further than anything proposed in the state before. But, he says he'd like to see what the public has to say about the plan. He's expecting a mixed reaction on the proposal when lawmakers hold public hearings on it around the state.
