The Governor remains hopeful lawmakers will act on clean energy legislation before the session wraps up.

Lawmakers have been working on the bill since January, which is intended to increase the use of renewable energy in Wisconsin and set new emissions standards. Governor Jim Doyle believes a final version of the package is close and that it’s moving in the right direction.

Doyle says the most important part of the package remains improved energy portfolio standards, which would require the state to get 25-percent of its energy and fuel from renewable sources by the year 2025. He says it’s the “heart of the bill” that he wants to have come to his desk.

The sponsors of the legislation have said they hope to have it passed and ready for the governor’s signature by Earth Day, later this month.
