Governor Doyle wants a review of the response to a snow-fueled traffic back-up on Interstate 90 this week.

Thousands of motorists were stranded this week on a 16-mile stretch of I-90 south of Madison, some for up to 12 hours. Governor Jim Doyle is ordering Brigadier General Donald Dunbar to conduct a full-scale review of the emergency response to the stranded motorists.

Governor Doyle is not apologizing for the slow response or assigning blame at this time. However, he is concerned that it took several hours to address a potentially life-threatening situation. The Governor says he didn't know about the situation until after 7 on Wednesday evening, several hours after the backup began. The National Guard was then mobilized to help motorists after 9 that evening.

Emergency response agencies have faced criticism for not informing the public about the danger sooner. Doyle wants to know why that happened and whether a new system is needed to get information out to the public.

Doyle says he expects a full report by the end of next week.
