The Governor says the time for delaying reforms of Milwaukee’s public school system is over.
Lawmakers have been unable to reach an agreement for months on the issue, and Governor Jim Doyle believes that inaction played a major role in the denial of Wisconsin’s application for federal Race to the Top education funding. Doyle says members of the MPS school board and some Democratic lawmakers continue to cling to the status quo, rather than working to change a system that is failing.
[Doyle wants the Legislature to act on a reform measure before the state makes another attempt to apply in June. He says it will boost Wisconsin’s chances in the second round, but admits there are no guarantees it will help.
Doyle says it’s unacceptable for legislative leaders to continue the delay any longer.
