The Governor is rescinding layoff notices for state workers. The order was sent to the Department of Administration and Office of State Employment Relations, following Thursday’s passage of the budget repair bill by the Legislature.

Governor Scott Walker sent out notifications last week to workers, arguing the failure of lawmakers to pass the bill would force the state to make cuts in order to close the budget deficit. In a statement, the Governor says the bill will now allow Wisconsin to realize $30 million in savings and balance the budget, putting Wisconsin back on a path to fiscal sustainability.

That’s despite the fact that many of the financial provisions were removed from the bill before it was approved. Walker says the state will be still able to save money because changes to collective bargaining for public employees remained in the legislation.

Governor Walker signed the bill into law this morning in private. He will hold an official bill signing ceremony later today at the Capitol.
