Governor Scott Walker wants the Legislature to invest more money to help connect rural Wisconsin to the internet
The governor wants the Legislature to pass legislation that directs an extra $35.5 million into broadband expansion and technology programs statewide. “Part of that will be through the broadband access grants – which are partnerships between local governments and the state, as well as local telecommunications providers – the other part will be a major increase in TEACH grants, which are Technology and Achievement grants to make sure our schools are wired,” Walker said during a stop in Seymour on Thursday.
Walker said it’s a major issue he’s heard at all his listening sessions, and will also help rural areas compete for jobs, improve education, and provide a higher quality of life. The governor said having limited internet access can be a challenge for businesses, both in trying to attract talent and in their daily operations.
