So, what’s the secret to living longer?
A cultural snapshot of one-hundred 100-year-olds shows it’s critically important to use whatever means possible to stay connected. The Evercare 100 at 100 survey focused not only on longevity, but also on how to be healthy, stay active and connected with the world.
“This year we found that over half felt that making the decisions when it came to nutrition, exercise, sleep, and staying connected with your community and those around you were the most important factors in living to a healthy vibrant old age.”
Dr. Mark Leenay (leh-NAY’), Medical Director of Evercare by UnitedHealthcare, says 8-percent of centenarians are texting or I-M-ing, that’s up from just 1-percent two years ago.
“And over 10-percent are using an iPod or online looking at youtube, and they’re also even tivo-ing TV shows and online with google and facebook.”
Leenay says the older generation likes to keep up with current events, and they know who’s hot. Centenarians have traded in Bill Cosby (55%) as their two-time dinner companion of choice for the ever popular Betty White (57%). Also, the old adage is true, it’s better to give than to receive. The survey shows volunteering is important for physical and mental health. Wisconsin is home to about 1-thousand centenarians — twice as many as neighboring Minnesota.
