A 63-year-old man died Monday after being struck by bullets fired by a Green Bay police officer. Green Bay police said the man showed a firearm, but did not say whether Darold E. VandenHeuvel pointed the handgun at officers or if he fired the weapon. The Green Bay Press Gazette reported that Captain Todd Thomas said those details are part of the investigation. Officers were dispatched to an apartment building on Green Bay’s west side just after 5:30 a.m. after receiving a call of a disturbance.

Officers who responded to the call searched the building and found VandenHeuvel, a former Green Bay resident living in Florence County, in an underground parking area. Thomas spoke with reporters at an afternoon press conference. He said the officers located VandenHeuval and engaged him in conversation. “The male produced a firearm and one officer fired multiple rounds, some of which struck the male,” he said. The officers administered first aid and VandenHeuvel was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he died.

The officer who shot VandenHeuvel is a 4½-year veteran of the department as well as a field training officer and a U.S. Army veteran. Thomas did not identify the officer and did not indicate whether the officer had been involved in other officer-involved shootings. The officer is on administrative leave.

VandenHeuvel’s wife told police that she had a restraining order against him, and Thomas said she had reported being stalked by VandenHeuvel twice in the past week or so.
