Mark Green calls for a new approach, on economic development.
The Republican candidate for governor says Democrat Jim Doyle has dropped the ball, in attracting jobs to the state. “A couple of months ago . . . Honda decided to locate its new Midwest manufacturing facility, along with 2,000 good paying jobs, to Indiana. According to published reporte . . . Governor Doyle didn't even call them,” said Green. Green proposes an entirely different approach to economic development, one he claims will move at the speed of business, and not the speed of bureaucracy. He'd eliminate the current Department of Commerce, and replace it with an economic development corporation.
Green claims that about half the businesses that contact the state for assistance receive confusing or inconsistent advice, and he notes a recent report found more than 150 state economic development programs. The Doyle campaign claimed inconsistency; that Congressman Green has voted for billions in tax breaks to companies that have shipped American jobs overseas.
