The hot and wet weather this summer may be a threat to oak trees in Wisconsin.

DNR forester Don Kissinger says conditions are conducive to the spread of oak wilt, a fungus that especially deadly for red oak trees. He says the fungus can kill them within a month, in the worst case scenario.

Kissinger says the fungus outbreak is being reported all over Wisconsin, but especially in the southern two-thirds of the state.

The symptoms are wilted leaves, and bronze or green semi-wet leaves on the ground.

The DNR recommends consulting with a private forestry expert if you suspect the presence of oak wilt.
