New guidelines from the Department of Natural Resources could help prevent discarded pharmaceuticals from entering our water supply. Suzanne Bangert, with the DNR's Bureau of Waste Management, says guidelines developed by the agency show how local governments can host collection sights for old or unwanted drugs. That process would result in them being destroyed, rather than dumped in landfills or flushed down a toilet. With the potential for some dangerous drugs to be turned in though, Bangert says the guidelines request collection points have law enforcement on hand. Environmental studies have shows prescription drugs are making their way into Wisconsin's water supply.
