State officials says be on the lookout for job scams involving doing work in Gulf of Mexico. Bureau of Consumer Protection Spokesperson Brock Bergey says the flim-flam man may even be using legit looking contact information listing BP or groups associated with Gulf activity.

In the application process, red flags would include a company that will guarantee hiring you if you pay a fee or ask for personal banking or credit card information. Both practices are not done by legitimate companies.

Bergery says the down economy makes people even more susceptible to these job offers even if that means relocating for employment.

So far DATCP has not received any complaints in Wisconsin but that doesn’t mean the activity isn’t going on here, according to Bergey. He encourages suspicious consumers to contact the agency’s office so they can add potential scammers to a searchable database.
