A proposal to raise the fee for buying a gun in Wisconsin is drawing fire at the Capitol.

Governor Doyle's budget would increase the fee paid to conduct a background check for gun purchases from $8 to $30. State Representative Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford) says it's tax assault on gun owners, amounting to what's basically a 300-percent tax increase.

Suder says the proposal goes way beyond what was recommended by the Department of Justice. The Attorney General had suggested a $5 increase, which would cover the actual cost of conducting the background checks.

Suder says the extra hike is just an attempt by the governor to fill in a massive budget hole on the backs of gun owners.
