Wisconsinites can write off donations to Haiti, sooner rather than later. The IRS is allowing donations, made between January 11th and before March 1st, to be claimed on the 2009 tax filing. Only cash contributions, rather than property donations are eligible.

IRS Spokesperson Carrie Resch says be sure your money is going to a legit organization.

Some organizations, such as churches or governments, may be qualified even though they are not listed on IRS.gov. Donors can find out more about organizations helping Haitian earthquake victims from agencies such as the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Resch also says keep a record showing the charity, the amount donated and date of transaction. This bank record could be a canceled check, credit card statement, or if by text message, a copy of your phone bill.
