Winnebago County executive Mark Harris has decided against a run for governor.

In a statement released this morning, Harris says that, while he has insights and ideas regarding the governance of Wisconsin, he has determined that entering the race “as an underfunded candidate” may not be helpful in defeating Republican Governor Scott Walker.

Harris’ decision leave state Senator Kathleen Vinehout (D-Alma) and former Trek executive Mary Burke as the top two potential Democratic candidates believed to be considering a run in 2014. Vinehout is not expected to make a decision until next year. While Burke has not formally announced any plans, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chairman Mike Tate said this week that he believes she would be an “instant frontrunner” if she were to enter the race.

Harris says he reserves the right to enter the race later, if those potential candidates decide not to run.
