Milwaukee Brewers 1st baseman Corey Hart will undergo knee surgery tomorrow

and miss at least the first six weeks of the 2013 season.
Hart had surgery on his right knee last spring to repair cartilage damage. He then experienced swelling in that same knee during offseason workouts and an MRI revealed damage in the knee.
Hart will have surgery tomorrow and be out of action three to four months.
The Brewers first baseman hit .270 last season with 30 home runs and 83 rbi’s in 149 games. Hart made 97 starts at first base and 49 in right field.
Hart’s injury should allow the Brewers to get a good early look at Mat Gamel who went down with an ACL injury on May 1st last year. At the time, Gamel was hitting .246 with 1 home run and 6 rbi’s in 21 games for the Brewers.
Prior to Hart’s injury, Gamel was expected to get some work in the outfield during spring training. That could still happen, but he should also see more at bats early on, giving the Brewers a better idea of just what they have with Gamel.
John Axford
The Brewers also agreed to a 2013 contract with closer John Axford worth $5-million, avoiding salary arbitration.
Axford made $525,000 last season, his 3rd year in the Major Leagues.
