Governors across the U.S., including Wisconsin’s Jim Doyle, have been receiving letters from an extremist group demanding their immediate resignation.

The letters came from an organization called Guardians of Free Republics and in some cases, the governors have been told to leave their offices or they would be “commandeered.” Wisconsin Department of Administration spokeswoman Carla Vigue says there were “no explicit threats to the governor” in the letter, but that the FBI was notified.

Some states added security or in some cases even closed down. The state capitol in Madison remained open Thursday. Guardians of Free Republics says on its web site that it wants to “restore America” by peacefully dismantling parts of the government.

Other Midwestern governors whose offices have confirmed receiving the letters include Minnesota’s Tim Pawlenty, Iowa’s Chet Culver and Michigan’s Jennifer Granholm. The FBI expects all 50 governors will eventually receive such letters.
