University of Wisconsin System officials say efforts to make it easier for students to obtain a photo ID for voting are showing progress.

Under the state’s new Voter ID law that takes full effect next year, most current student IDs on UW campuses will not qualify to be used at the polls. UW System President Kevin Reilly says campuses across the state are working on the problem and the issues should be resolved by the time spring elections roll around.

So far, ten UW campuses have had designs for new student ID cards that can be used to vote approved by state election officials. Reilly says four others have submitted plans that are still waiting for approval.

On most campuses, students will be able to request a card specifically for voting purposes that will be separate from their official student ID. Only one campus so far, the UW-Superior, has designed a new primary ID card that will be issued to all students.

Reilly says the bottom line is that all institutions are working “hard, fast, and smart” to make sure students comply with the new law and will be able to participate in upcoming elections.
