A nonprofit group turns to technology, to help seniors stay in their homes. "Ou goal is to help people stay in their homes safely," says Ann Albert, Program Director for Dane County's Support for Active Independent Lives, or SAIL . "The senior wears a pendant, and they're able to push a button on their pendant and send a signal to a monitoring station."

Maybe you've already seen this advertised on TV, but Albert says her nonprofit group can offer the service for less. Not only that, but they'll be able to utilizes "passive monitoring," as well, to determine if seniors need help. "We could even put sensors on refrigerator doors," says Albert. The system is available to SAIL members for $18 a month, along with a one-time fee of $55 for installation and instruction in the home. Albert believes the nonprofit model could easily be implemented in other Wisconsin communities.
