Several state lawmakers are pushing a plan that would increase the speed limit on Wisconsin’s interstate highway system to 70 miles per hour, although the governor is showing little interest in the idea.
While he’s not necessarily against the proposal, Governor Scott Walker says he has not given it much thought either. Speaking with reporters in Eau Claire Wednesday, Walker said “to me, it’s not necessarily a good or bad idea, but…it’s not on my radar.”

Supporters of the change argue it would help drivers reach their destinations faster and would bring the state in line with its neighbors. Wisconsin is the only state in the Midwest to still have a 65 mph speed limit.
The bill is expected to be brought up in the Legislature during the fall session. Walker says his focus for the upcoming session is on ways to create jobs, through policies that focus on economic and workforce development issues, along with improving education.
