The Wisconsin men’s hockey team (1-8-1, 0-0-0 Big Ten) earned its first win of the season Saturday night, as the Badgers defeated Ferris State (7-7-1, 4-4-0 WCHA), 5-3 at the Kohl Center on Saturday night.

The win marked Badgers goaltender Joel Rumpel’s 50th career victory, tying him with Mike Dibble for eighth all-time in program history.  Rumpel made 30 saves in goal.

Wisconsin freshman Jack Dougherty scored the game winner in the third period, his first goal as a Badger.  Dougherty’s tally came on the power play and it gave the Badgers a score with the man advantage for the third straight game.

Late in the third period, Grant Besse made it a two-goal advantage for the Badgers with an empty netter, his second goal of the game.

Senior Matt Paape broke a 77-game scoreless streak when he tallied a goal in the second period.  the last time Paape scored prior to last night was Jan. 13, 2012.

Defensively, the Badgers blocked 16 shots in the game.

Wisconsin picked up a win and a tie in the series and remains home next weekend.  The Badgers will open up Big Ten Conference play with a series against Penn State.  Faceoff time is 8 p.m. and the game will air on ESPNNEWS.
